NatureKids is an innovative project that empowers children and families to reconnect with the natural world. We believe learning about biodiversity should be as fun as it is educational!
Through outdoor learning, creative activities, and eco-action projects, we nurture a lifelong respect for nature while addressing the barriers many underserved communities face in accessing green spaces.
We believe that every child deserves the chance to thrive in nature. That's why we've designed this project to provided equitable opportunities or children and young people from all backgrounds toy expereince the healing, educational, and transformative benefits of the outdoors.
NatureKids was born out of a growing concern about the disconnect between children and nature, especially in underserved communities. Research consistently shows that time spent in nature:
Our mission is to address these challenges by creating accessible, engaging, and inclusive nature-based opportunities for children and families.
Key Focus Areas:
Guided excursions to local green spaces where children can learn about ecosystems, identify wildlife, and develop a connection to the natural world.
Practical sessions such as building bird nests, crafting feeders, and creating art from natural materials to encourage creativity and biodiversity awareness.
Hands-on environmental projects like planting pollinator-friendly flowers, creating habitats, and contributing to local conservation efforts.
Teaching essential survival skills, such as fire-building, shelter construction, and natural navigation, while fostering teamwork and resilience.
As part of NatureKids, we organise exciting trips to places like Newhails Estate in Musselburgh, local woodlands and green spaces, Deep Sea World, The National Museum of Scotland, and the ZOO. These outings offer children the chance to ecperience diverse ecosystems, learn about wildlife conservation, and connect with nature in meaningful ways.
Children gain a deeper appreciation for biodiversity and the environment, inspiting them to become future stewards of the natural world.
Participants had a stronger connection to nature and an understanding of biodiversity.
Spending time outdoors in nature has proven mental health benefits, including reduced stress and increased resilience.
By participating in group activities and collaborative projects, children build friendships, develop teamwork skills, and experience a sense of belonging.
Hands-on learning and problem-solving activities help children feel empowered and encourage imaginative thinking.
